If you are a Trekkie, you have probably been watching with bated breath as the casting decisions have rolled in over recent weeks for CBS’s upcoming Star Trek: Discovery. Now the lead role has been cast, and it has gone to Sonequa Martin-Green of The Walking Dead! This is the first time an African American woman has been cast as the lead in any Star Trek series.
Martin-Green’s character still has not been named, but we do know that she will be a lieutenant-commander “with caveats,” not a starship captain. Other actors to join the diverse cast include Michelle Yeoh as the captain of Starship Shenzhou, Doug Jones as an alien science officer, and Anthony Rapp as the first openly gay character ever in any Star Trek television show. Three actors also have just been cast to play Klingons: Chris Obi, Shazad Latif, and Mary Chieffo.
The first episode of Star Trek: Discovery will air on CBS in May. All subsequent episodes will only be available through CBS’s All Access internet streaming service.
